Aha!
An Aha moment isn't always a groundbreaking revelation. Sometimes, it's the smallest discovery or shift in your usual thinking that qualifies as an Aha moment.
That's exactly what happened to me. I was in my kitchen making breakfast. I had brewed a cup of coffee and added cream. Then, I cooked eggs and bacon, and finally, I decided I wanted cheese toast. If you're not familiar with cheese toast, it's made by toasting bread in the oven, then adding butter and a slice of cheese on top, instead of using jelly or jam.
While preparing my cheese toast, I took out the bread, grabbed the butter from the fridge, and, as always, placed a small amount of butter in one corner of the bread, then another in the opposite corner. Suddenly, a thought struck me: why do I always butter the bread this way? Why haven't I ever spread the butter across the whole slice or tried a different pattern? As trivial as this question might seem, it prompted me to think more deeply about it and the reasoning behind my actions.
And there it was, one of those Aha moments that wasn't monumental but was crucial for sparking some significant self-reflection.
As I pondered why I always buttered the bread like this, I realized I did it because it's what I saw my mother do. That's how she made our toast, so as I grew up and made my own or prepared toast for my children, I unconsciously copied what I'd always seen without giving it much thought.
This realization made me delve deeper into myself, questioning how many other things I do simply because that's how I've always seen them done. Influences from my mother, grandmothers, aunts, and even friends shape who we become, whether positively or not so ideally.
Aha! As responsible adults, we owe it to ourselves to reassess our actions and traditions, making a conscious choice to say, “not me,” “not that way.” I am not bound to be a product of what I've always observed if it doesn't benefit me positively or align with my future aspirations.
It's never too late to implement positive changes that align with your life's goals.
Aha!
